Pu Duan

Chemistry Graduate Student

Brandeis University

Pu Duan peformed the first advanced quantitative and selective NMR studies on nanothreads in the Schmidt-Rohr group at Brandeis.  He will continue to investigate nanothread NMR in the CNC.

Sikai Wu

Chemistry Graduate Student

Pennsylvania State University

Sikai Wu joined the Badding lab after graduated from USTC in China.  She is taking over the nanothread synthesis effort from Xiang Li who has left for a postdoctoral position. Colleagues from the Elacqua and Trauner groups will join her efforts later in the semester.

Margaret Gerthoffer

Chemistry Graduate Student

Pennsylvania State University

Margaret Gerthoffer joined the Elacqua lab after obtained her B.S. in Biochemistry from Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA in 2018.  She is a part of the nanothread synthesis team, focusing on novel functionalities to increase the applicability of nanothreads.

Steven Huss

Chemistry Graduate Student

Pennsylvania State University

Steven Huss obtained his BS in Chemistry at West Chester University, where he worked under Dr. Mark Shuman using Supercritical Fluid Chromatography to quantify capsaicinoids in hot peppers, while assisting in redesigning some experiments for the undergraduate organic chemistry lab. He also explored the photoluminescence quenching of silicon nanopores with Kurt Kolasinski. Steven started an internship at Sartomer (Arkema Group) during the spring of 2017 and continued until the summer of 2018. He then attended the Ph.D. program here at PSU, in the Badding Group. In the fall of 2019, he joined the Elacqua Group and continued his work on reducing the pressure requirement for synthesizing carbon nanothreads.

Bohan Xu

Physics Graduate Student

Pennsylvania State University

Bohan Xu obtained his BS in Physics and Mathematics at Northwestern University. He started the Ph.D. program in physics here at PSU in 2018. Starting from 2020, he has been working under Prof. Vincent H. Crespi studying nanothread materials. More specifically, he has been computing and understanding the behavior of nanothread packing in order to determine the molecular structure of the threads produced in experiments. He is also working on reaction pathways and conductivity.

Arani Biswas

Chemistry Graduate Student

Pennsylvania State University

Arani Biswas obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at University of Burdwan, India and his M.S. from the University of Hyderabad, India where he worked under Dr. Rajadurai Chandrasekar on lanthanide-doped light-emitting polymers. He joined the Badding Group in 2015 and has been working in collaboration with the Strobel group at Carnegie Institute on the synthesis of heteroatom doped nanothreads. His main research focus is on structure elucidation of nanothreads with X-ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Vibrational Spectroscopy.
